"Soils in a Warmer World"

The Canadian Society of Soil Science/Société Canadienne de science du sol

welcomes you to the

24th World Congress of Soil Science

Colleagues,

The Canadian Society of Soil Science (CSSS), as well as our partners, Destination Toronto and the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, welcomes you to the 24th World Congress of Soil Science (WCSS) of the International Union of Soil Sciences (IUSS) in Canada, during July of 2030.

A half-century after our predecessors gathered for the 1978 WCSS in Edmonton, a new generation of Canadian soil scientists and practitioners would energetically welcome their international colleagues to the vibrant, multicultural city of Toronto. Located on the traditional territory of various Indigenous Peoples, including the Mississaugas of the Credit, the Anishnabeg, the Chippewa, the Haudenosaunee, and the Wendat, Toronto remains home to many First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples, as well as to immigrants, and their descendants, representing more than 250 ethnicities.

Considering the impact of ongoing climatic changes on soils, and the consequences for both managed and natural ecosystems globally, the theme of the 24th WCSS, in Canada, is Soils in a Warmer World. Across our vast polar and temperate country, representing eighteen major terrestrial ecosystems, we are facing real changes in temperature and precipitation patterns. In collaboration with our many public sector, private sector, and civil society partners, as well as cooperating landowners, we would organize local and regional activities featuring a diversity of topical soil issues, highlight our related research and innovations, and showcase effective strategies for applying suitable practical solutions.

The WCSS is an occasion for soil specialists to convene, to connect with their partners in allied sciences and professions, as well as to raise attention among the general public about soil as an essential natural resource for life, and the urgent need to preserve it. Cutting-edge digital technologies would be used to maximize the experience for both in-person and virtual participants, whether in the conference room or during a field event.

We hope to see you at the 24th WCSS in Toronto in 2030!
